Obtaining API Keys

OpenAI API Key

To get an API key for OpenAI (ChatGPT models):

  1. Go to OpenAI's API page
  2. Sign in with your OpenAI account.
  3. Navigate to API Keys in the settings.
  4. Click Create a new secret key.
  5. Copy and securely store the key, as you won’t be able to view it again.

Gemini API Key

To get an API key for Gemini (Google AI models):

  1. Go to Google AI Studio
  2. Sign in with your Google account.
  3. Navigate to API Keys and click Generate API Key.
  4. Copy and securely store the API key.

Easy Ollama Setup (macOS)

For a quick setup on macOS, download and run the installer from ollama.ai. Then, open a new terminal window and run the following command to download the llama3.1:8b model:

ollama pull llama3.1:8b

Installing Ollama

Alternatively, you can install Ollama manually. Download Ollama from ollama.ai. Follow the installation instructions for your operating system:

Download and install the binary from the official site.

Running Ollama

Before using CopyTranslate with Ollama, make sure Ollama is running in the background by running the following command in your terminal:

ollama serve

Downloading and Setting Up a Translation Model

A lightweight and efficient model for translation is llama3.1:8b, as it provides good language capabilities without requiring excessive resources. To download and set up this model, run the following command in a separate terminal window:

ollama pull llama3.1:8b

For an even lighter alternative, Gemma or Llama 2 7B could work, but Mistral is generally better for NLP tasks, including translation.
